Dorothy Lathrop's Animals of the Bible won the very first Caldecott Medal when it was originally published in 1937. Now, in honor of the sixtieth anniversary of this prestigious medal and its first recipient, comes this special deluxe edition of Lathrop's award-winning collection of some of the Bible's most extraordinary animals. Thirty richly detailed black-and-white drawings illustrate the favorite stories of the Creation, Noah's Ark, the first Christmas, and many others. A glorious tribute to a great tradition in children's literature, this special anniversary edition will be a keepsake to treasure for years to come.

Helen Dean Fish was both author and editor of many popular anthologies and picture books for children. Dorothy Lathrop began illustrating children's books in 1919, and was awarded the first Randolph Caldecott Medal for Animals of the Bible in 1938. She went on to win the Eyre Medal of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1941.

Reviews

  • This is a stunning, beautiful book. Its illustrations are gorgeous and it's a great depiction of the Biblical stories from the Old and New Testament. Even if you don't read the Bible, it's still a stunning book to look at and it has gorgeous drawings. This book is ideal for any art lover, illustrator, child and person who can appreciate illustrations from many years ago. I highly recommend this book, it's fantastic!

  • Animals of the Bible is noteworthy as the first Caldecott winner for outstanding children's book illustration, but it is much more than a note in the history of children's literature. The beautiful pen-and-ink illustrations show why it won, but for Christian parents and grandparents, the text is just as memorable. Passages of Scripture relate to the animals (not just Noah, but Elijah's ravens and Jonah's large marine creature (whale or fish is debatable) are rendered exquisitely. I bought this book for my 5-year-old granddaughter and her artist mother has enjoyed it as well. Strongly recommend. Nancy Cook Smith, Ph.D. Harvard University

  • Every year I tell my students about the Caldecott Award, an annual award given to the illustrator of the best picture book. This was the first Caldecott Award winner in 1923. Then I show them other winners and they get to see the different types of illustrations and learn about those winning illustrators. The stories in this book are from the Bible, but the black and white pictures are beautifully done by Dorothy Lathrop.

  • This is a scripturally sound book with black and white drawings and I found it most interesting for my grandson.
