Attorney Deborah Knott is running for district judge in good-old-boy-ruled Colleton County, N.D.
MARGARET MARON grew up in the country near Raleigh, North Carolina, but for many years lived in Brooklyn, New York. When she and her artist husband returned to the farm that had been in her family for a hundred years, she began a series based on her own background. The first book, Bootlegger's Daughter , became a Washington Post bestseller that swept the major mystery awards for its year-winning the Edgar, Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity Awards for Best Novel-and is among the 100 Favorite Mysteries of the Century as selected by the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association. Later Deborah Knott novels Up Jumps the Devil , Storm Track , and Three-Day Town each also won the Agatha Award for Best Novel. Margaret is also the author of the Sigrid Harald series of detective novels. In 2008, Maron received the North Carolina Award for Literature, the highest civilian honor the state bestows on its authors. And in 2013, the Mystery Writers of America celebrated Maron's contributions to the mystery genre by naming her a Grand Master-an honor first bestowed on Agatha Christie. A great find
As a mystery fan, I am always looking for new series to enjoy. Bought this first in a series to see if it would join Martha Grimes, J.A. Jance, Alex Gray and Deborah Crombie on my list of must reads. Will definitely be ordering the second of the series, set in North Carolina ... a far cry from many English mysteries I love. The "feeling" of the story had something almost nostaglic about it - far from goody-two-shoes, but not filled with tormented detectives more involved in their own messed up lives than in solving crimes. Deborah Knott, the bootlegger's daughter, is someone you'd like to know with a bevy of friends, relatives and colleagues who will no doubt pop up in future stories.

Well worth reading
Excellent mystery and deserved winner of mystery book prizes. The North Carolina setting and family history of the main protagonist makes for additional interest. The writing style is competent and easy to follow without being facile and the plotbhad some good twists and turns without being too clever for its own good. For those who like a murder mystery replete with torture, gore, high velocity shootouts, police brutality, sex and/or swooning vapid romances, move right along, nothing for you here. Anyone else should enjoy it...

great read
first of all, it came in perfect condition and was just like new. This was a new author to me and I'm so glad I found her. I really enjoyed this one, and have ordered the second in the series. If you enjoy cozy mysteries I'd highly recommend this one.

It Won Them All.
Margaret Maron's BOOTLEGGER'S DAUGHTER won every award for mystery fiction and is the beginning of the Deborah Knott series, with one prequel BLOODY KIN. Set in a fictional place near Raleigh, NC the story explores family, politics, homosexuality, and a cold case of murder. The pace is slow of a modern mystery, but the reader has time to explore some fascinating characters and setting. A very strong beginning for an experience writer who has returned home. If you've read others in the series, come back to this one because it is Margaret Maron at her writing best. Though I'll admit to admiring her NY characters more than I do Deborah, just a matter of taste not quality. Nash Black, author of WRITING AS A SMALL BUSINESS and SINS OF THE FATHERS.
