Should be mandatory reading for all high school children.
I love this book and have read it many times. I brings to life a way of life that many people will never encounter or understand. It shows that most poor people do not chose to live in poverty and in fact haven't always lived this way. No matter how hard you try sometimes bad things just seem to happen. Even in her dire situation people in this book still find a bit of good in other and while there lives seem unimaginable, they are still helping others. Always leaves me wanting to do more! Thank you for all your books Mr. Kozel!

A Timeless Plea for Change
Please note: Five stars for author and contents of book. Two stars only for the physical shape of the book received. This is a most amazing sociological and literary look into the lives of amazing people. It should be required reading for anyone who thinks they want to be a true educator. Jonathan Kozol has a writing style that makes you feel you are walking beside him, where so many people are forgotten and hope can be hard to come by. He reminds me of a combination Chaplain, social worker and great educator. The book gives a very realistic picture of so many who live in poverty, where systems are broken, but where heroes can be found in everyday places who just give from what they have. It makes the reader want to understand how some of the richest and most gracious and forgiving people on earth are those described by a disturbed society as the “throwaways.” At times, In his optimism and naivete, he writes like a young man filled with hope and zeal that things will change, and as the pages turn, you see he then begins to feel the cries of the people but knows the reality is, things may not change, but only grow worse, if we as a society do not change. Must read! As for condition of hardback: not very clean, and really stubborn barcode-stickers thoughtlessly placed on the artistically captured young person on front cover. Dusty but acceptable.
