more than a nature story: a tale of healing
I didn't realise it was a children's book, and just finished it. I have a friend who is a veteran and loves pigeons and thought he might like it as a gift. The book is in two parts: first about the natural world and the life of a pigeon, but then when the pigeon is called upon to serve in WWI there is an deep and poignant account of what war does to any creature, human or animal. It deals with postwar stress, without ever using those modern terms. Instead, it talks about fear, anger, and worry; how they are related. And how they can be healed. A beautiful little book with a glimmer of hope and spirituality that is no more than a few paragraphs, but which I will never forget. I would think this should be required reading for anyone who knows someone who had been in combat. Again, that's not the major theme, but its dealt with surprisingly well.

A most beautiful uncommon story - a mix of the best of India's heritage/folklore, Buddhism and all spirituality. Sometimes very anthropomorphic, sometimes very authentic views of animals [and humans] and perhaps, what they think & see. It even looks at war very pragmatically, it touched what I knew, realizing the innocence of animals often brought on by experiencing combat. It made me love my 12 year old son even more who talks to animals, & the beautiful stalwart stoic racing pigeons we share. Remember it was written in 1927! It truly touched my heart.

Superb
My niece loves pigeons, so when I came across this book I hit the jack pot. I also like to read books before giving it as a gift, so we can have an extra something to talk about. So glad I did read it because it is not my 2nd favorite book to read. There is suspense, history and elements from another culture/land. This is a great book for anyone, especially a kid that likes animals, adventure or history.
