Work Information

It lifts unease from the depths of memory and turns it into fragments of fantasy.

Patricia Geary moves between childhood memory and supernatural suggestion to probe the characters’ inner unease. The result leaves behind both lyricism and disquiet.

Reviews

  • I found this book a little long and a little confusing with all the different cariters is so much more than just a little hard.

  • This is a fabulous book. It draws you in from the first moment and you try to play catchup throughout the entire exposition. What is real???What is not? or is it all real. The empathy that you feel for Pet continues to draw you in and keep you reading. It is an unusual coming of age story that involves the real, the unreal, and what are you going to believe to keep you and your family safe. What are you willing to do.Who would want to have to make these tough decisions. But...some of us have to make those decision in our lives, a family member, brain dead, and need to say unplug the machines, an elderly family member with Alzheimer's who no longer recognizes close family members and is having trouble eating, when and where do you draw the line at care. In every other circumstance you try to keep things going, keep the plan moving on, do everything possible, keep life moving as best as possible. But, when do you say ENOUGH! Who could have the strength of sole to carry on....For those who continue to try to do the best to make the right choices, keep our family safe, while making humane choices this is the story for you....I find more ideals each time I read this book. Please make it available on kindle!!!

  • I'm not sure, really, what to say about this book. Was it good? We'll come back to that; interesting? Yeah, very much so! Would I read it again? Honestly, I have to say probably not. Would I recommend it? Well, now, that's kind of iffy. If you enjoy really 'out there' books, I'd say yes, but if you like a straight up story, then definitely not. So, then, back to 'did I like it'? Kind of. It held my attention, but there were places I got lost and had to re-read. There is no way I can describe the book, the story line was interesting, and well thought out, the dialogue was well done, but it was tough, in the beginning, to make sense of. It was definitely strange (as the name suggests). By the half-way mark, I was hooked, but I'm not sure why, because I don't go in for this kind of story usually; which is a testament to the writer. Still, it was odd, and I'd caution you if your mind wanders or you read so you don't have to think, as this book will keep you on your toes.

  • Not really sure what to think about this story. Brief interactions with voodoo-like other worldliness that the character doesn't understand but for some reason accepts. And because it's told in first person viewpoint, the reader doesn't understand either - at least I didn't. There didn't seem to be any reason for these events either, can't figure out what the point of it all was. A bit disappointing.

  • This book should be much better known than it is. It won a PK Dick award when it came out. It's a "horror novel," but it is also a bitter sweet tale about childhood and a girl's coming of age in the sixties. By 1969, Pet, the heroine, gets upset whenever Jay & the Americans' version of "This Magic Moment" comes on the radio -- and for good reason. But I love the book and Pet so much that I regularly play that song while I'm driving around and think of her. How's that for a testimonial?
