Work Information

Through a youth raised on the Moon, the weight and lightness of a future society come into view.

A lunar-colony coming-of-age novel that combines John M. Ford’s wit and delicacy. Rather than spectacle, it focuses on the moments when a person stands up under environmental and family pressure.

Review Summaries

  • Readers admire the intimate voice and lunar details, though the deliberate gaps and omissions will not suit everyone.

Reviews

  • coming of age on the moon

like all Fords works, complex people in a thoroughly worked out imagined world. nothing is simple, and quite a bit is left unexplained. just like life

  • Read it!

This is one of my top 10 writers. I read this book when it was first published, and still have it on my shelf. It is a bildungsroman told from multiple points of view. Every line in the book seems carefully crafted, and the technology behind the railroad is clearly thought out. There are times when the prose is very dense, and I have to read a paragraph multiple times to get all the nuances of what the author is saying, but it is worth the work.

  • That one really earns the title "classic"

John M. Ford is one of my favorite authors, and he really delivers there. Not only great Sci-Fi, but one of the best Y-A books ever written.

  • slow start, decent ending

It has been more than a week since I read this. I remember being a tad disapointed in the whole. Slow start, good not awesome ending.
