The Waste Land and Other Poems

T. S. Eliot

A landmark modernist poem that layers myth, religion, and literary allusion to portray a fractured postwar world. Its broken voices and dense references explore loss, renewal, and spiritual desolation.

April is the cruellest month, breeding Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing Memory and desire, stirring Dull roots with spring rain . . . Published in 1922, The Waste Land was the most revolutionary poem of its time, offering a devastating vision of modern civilisation which has lost none of its power as we enter a new century.

Thomas Stearns Eliot was born in St Louis, Missouri, in 1888. He settled in England in 1915 and published his first book of poems in 1917. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948. Eliot died in 1965.

Reviews

  • Perfect for Bachelor

I bought this book as an extra to my literary studies seminar and it was really useful. The annotations at the back are a life safer, specially when it comes to analysing Prufrock.

  • MaravillosoA fractured mirror of the modern soul

Reading The Waste Land feels like walking through a ruined cathedral with fragments of beauty still shimmering in the dust. Eliot doesn't offer answers—he offers echoes, ghosts, broken voices layered like collage. As an artist and someone who moves between disciplines, I found the poem both challenging and strangely comforting. It reflects the noise, the longing, the fragmentation of the modern mind. There’s despair, yes—but also a haunting kind of music beneath the surface, like a melody half-remembered in a dream. Eliot demands a lot, but what he gives in return is a glimpse into the raw architecture of cultural memory, spiritual thirst, and the quiet dignity of survival.

  • Review of Kindle Edition of The Waste Land and Other Poems

I'm very pleased with this edition. I'm reading The Waste Land for a class and am happy to report that the stanza formatting has been retained, the Table of Contents is linked to the individual poems, and the superscripts link to the actual notes. I loaded my T.S. Eliot Reads The Waste Land onto my Kindle, and it's really neat following along with his reading. The Introduction, Suggestions for Further Reading, and Brief Chronology are also greatly appreciated. VERY well spent $2.50!!

  • Grande libro

L'edizione mi sembra buona, senza particolari pecche.
