Little Theme (His Dark Materials S.)
Lyra sets out north to rescue her missing friend in the opening novel of a parallel-world fantasy cycle.
Work Information
An adventure around Dust and the alethiometer gradually opens onto the structure of the world itself.
It works as a magical adventure while keeping doubt about authority and received truth at its core. As the entry point to the trilogy, it sets up the scale and tension of the series with precision.

This is the first in a trilogy in which a new universe has been created. A world where daemons swoop and scuttle along the streets of Oxford and London, where the mysterious Dust swirls invisibly through the air, and where one child knows secrets the adults would kill for.
Reviews

There are lots of reviews of this book so it is difficult to say anything new. It is an outstanding book (the best of the three, in my opinion) and deserves the praise I have seen for it. I kept wondering if it was meant to be a children's book, as I was reading it, and of course it is - but to restrict it to children would be most unfair! I suppose you do need to be receptive to the ideas and have some imagination - but that's no problem to a lot of us big kids.

I bought the numbered/signed by author hardback copy of this book for 40 pounds and I am overwhelmed by it! It was bought as a gift for my girlfriend and she loves it as it is one of her favourite books to read. The woodcut design is beautiful and the pages are thick. You can tell this is made very well. As a bonus it comes in a hard slip-case box to protect it. The slip case has a big shiny design of the alethiometer embossed on it. Extremely happy.
