Big Tree: 2

Mary and Conrad Buff

A giant sequoia named Wawona tells the story of its own life, from seed to towering old age, before human threats enter the picture. By weaving in the history of the species, the book quietly contrasts the endurance of nature with human intervention.

Work Information

Through a sequoia's 5,000-year life, the book reveals the scale of nature and time.

Published in 1946, this children's book lets the giant sequoia Wawona narrate its own life, from its beginnings as a seed to its long growth and eventual encounter with human threat. Brief interleaves about the history of sequoias give the story both scale and a sense of fragility.

Review Summaries

  • Readers value the tree-centered perspective and the rich depictions of animals and seasons. Some also find the older children's-book voice a little distant.

  • The layered structure, which blends a sequoia's life with the history of the species, is seen as especially effective. Its force as a nature story and its quiet, classic picture-book mood both stay memorable.

  • My FAVORITE book!

When I was a little girl in the 60's, this was my very favorite book. I would buy a candy bar, and sit and read this book cover to cover. I would make that candy bar last an hour! This book started a profound interest of Nature in me. I have been a bird watcher and hiker for many years now. I will share this book with my Grandson when he is old enough to read it! I had been looking for this book in used book stores, libraries, and finally found it on Amazon! Shipper was fast and the book arrived in great condition! Thanks Amazon!
