The story of William Penn, a charismatic and much loved Quaker preacher, and his numerous acccomplishments and role in history.
A historical account of the life of William Penn. I have long known that William Penn was a Quaker that founded the city of Philadelphia, but there was so much about him that I didn't know. I was surprised to learn that he was from a very wealthy family with ties to both King Charles II, and King James II. It was surprising thereafter, to learn that he defied his father to become a Quaker, and led a life of turmoil and persecution for his faith, even to being imprisoned in the Tower of London. It was endearing to hear of the numerous times he was jailed for preaching the Quaker faith, and of how instrumental he is was in getting releases of thousands of imprisoned Quakers, some which he knew, and many that he didn't even know. I did not realize that the now state of Pennsylvania was a grant to him by King Charles II to be governor, nor that because of his persecution for being a Quaker and political enemies he lost and rewon over a period of years. It was surprising that even thought he built a great estate outside of Philadelphia, and had a home in the city, that the Kings of England prevented him from returning to the America he loved with many imprisonments and denial to return to Pennslyvania. He spent much of that time in hiding from his political and helping rule Philadelphia, as Governor, by the numerous letters and appointments to government from England. Although I would have liked to learn more of his personal story, this is a very informative and simple history of the life, intelligence, integrity, and faith of William Penn.
