Rabbit Hill

Robert Lawson

Robert Lawson's award-winning Rabbit Hill is a story in which the animals living on a hill rethink food, daily life, and their relationship with neighbors after new people move into a nearby house. With a humorous voice, it gently uses the animals' small society to explore sharing and coexistence.

Work Information

New people arrive on the hill, and the rules of everyday life begin to change.

Robert Lawson's 1945 Newbery Medal winner is both written and illustrated by the author himself. It follows the animals on a hill as they watch a newly arrived human family and wobble between caution and hope, all in a light and approachable style. The charming details of animal life help explain why the book has continued to be read across generations.

Review Summaries

  • Readers value its gentle animal fable quality and the way it quietly shows the relationship between land and people. At the same time, some find the classic style and clear moral line a little slow to settle into.

It has been a while since Folks lived in the Big House, and an even longer time has passed since there has been a garden at the House. All the animals of the Hill are very excited about the new Folks moving in, and they wonder how things are going to change. It’s only a matter of time before the animals of the Hill find out just who is moving in, and they may be a little bit surprised when they do.

Robert Lawson (1892-1957) received his art training at the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts. His favorite medium, pen and ink, is used expressively and with detail in his black and white illustrations in The Story of Ferdinand (by Munro Leaf). In addition to illustrating many children's books, including Mr. Popper's Penguins , Robert Lawson also wrote and illustrated a number of his own books for children. In 1940, he was awarded the Caldecott Medal for his picture book illustrations in They Were Strong and Good and in 1944, he was awarded the Newbery Medal for his middle grade novel Rabbit Hill .

Reviews

  • İt came i like it.

  • In this book, Robert Lawson tells the story of a peaceful, cooperative community of (anthropomorphized) animals which feels threatened by the arrival in their area of new humans. There is rich development of the characters, and colourful descriptions of the locale. The plot moves at a satisfying pace, and is suspenseful in places. And there are beautiful illustrations by the author. While intended as a story for children, I think it can be enjoyed equally by adults who love animals. And if it is read to a children at the right age, they will be inclined to be kind to animals.

  • Very pleasant story suitable for children and people who never grow up. Got it for myself. (In my eighties.)

  • My granddaughter enjoyed reading the book! It was a nice surprise in the mail.

  • A classic children book which I read a long time ago and wanted to read again, I love it!!!
