Joseph had a little overcoat, but it was full of holes—just like this book! When Joseph's coat got too old and shabby, he made it into a jacket. But what did he make it into after that? And after that? As children turn the pages of this book, they can use the die-cut holes to guess what Joseph will be making next from his amazing overcoat, while they laugh at the bold, cheerful artwork and learn that you can always make something, even out of nothing.

Simms Taback grew up in the Bronx and graduated from Cooper Union. He worked as an art director and a graphic designer, and taught at the School of Visual Arts and Syracause University. He illustrated many children's books, including There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly (Viking) , Spacy Riddles , Snakey Riddles , Buggy Riddles , and Fishy Riddles (all written by Katy Hall and lIsa Eisenberg, Dial). His work has won many awards, including the Caldecott Honor Award Medal for There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly and a New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book. Reviews

YL1.0 182語

  • Creative cut-outs, elegant prose, and a progressively more enteratining story -- a real winner!

The simplicity and clarity of the text in this book belies its sophistication. It takes WORK to tell a story as simply as this. Wonderful fable about how Joseph loves his overcoat, until one day.... Each page tells the tale of how the overcoat (vest, scarf, handkerchief, button) eventually loses its shine and is repurposed into another useful -- but smaller! -- object. In each case, cleverly designed cut-outs in the page illustrate how the fabric is being cut down into smaller and smaller items. The final page is a wonderful full-circle moment. This story is written by a Jewish author and based on a Yiddish song. It was a beloved childhood favorite in my (non-Jewish) household and as an adult I have given it many times to both Jewish and non-Jewish friends. Could not recommend this more highly!

  • Charming folktale. Book includes cutouts

One of my favorite books when I was a child. Joseph keeps resourcefully reusing his worn-out clothes to create new clothes. Based on a traditional Jewish folktale, but is universal and timeless - and maybe even more relevant now as an antidote to our throw-away consumer culture of today. Each page has a cutout to build the suspense and fun of what object Joseph will create next.

  • Lovely colourful book!!

I just bought this for my nephew. My daughter loved this book. So colourful and a very good message about upcycling and using what you have rather than throwing things away. Book was in great condition, glad it can be enjoyed by another little one.

  • So cool and unusual story

This book is simply amazing! My 2.5 years loves it! Although, he doesn't understand some cool details, the format, illustrations, little touches are outstanding!

  • Very good book for reading time.

    Love this story
