Work Information

From one murder case, it throws the deep flaws of a system into relief.

Brian Cathcart carefully traces the investigation into Stephen Lawrence's killing and shows how police failure and social prejudice reinforced one another. The investigative strength of journalism becomes the book's structure.

Eighteen-year-old Stephen Lawrence, the son of Jamaican immigrants, was murdered on the night of 22 April 1993 whilst standing at a bus-stop, by a gang of white youths. Cathcart wrote a long piece about the murder and all its ramifications for "Granta" magazine, and this is the basis for his book: an account of the crime, the investigation and the criminal culture of South-East London that gave rise to the murderers.

Reviews

  • Police scape goats

An interesting book, which in my opinion gives a one sided slanted view of the police. Political and not impartial.

  • Institutional Complacency…

I had to stop reading this book for a time because as a forcibly retired police officer, forced out of the police for cost cutting reasons, I was ashamed of the ineptitude shown by officers in this investigation. The embarrassing lack of professionalism displayed right down to the inability to even pass on messages shows an almost blatant disregard for the feelings of victims and their families. Stick to the basics and treat people as you would like to be treated yourself. It raises the question for me that why oh why couldn’t this have been a botched investigation into the death of a white piece of s#*t that no one cared about instead of Stephen Lawrence who never hurt anyone…? I’m almost ashamed to say that I was a police officer these days. The book is painfully thoroughly researched but without a good or hopeful ending. Since this publication two of the offenders have been convicted but it seems that there is still an unwillingness to try and convict the others. I fear that those higher ups in the Met just want this whole debacle to go away so they can get on with their careers and while this goes on we will never learn from our mistakes…

  • Very enlightening

I think everyone thinks they know the Stephen Lawrence story, but this excellent book catalogues the unbelievable incompetence of the Metropolitan police from top to bottom.

  • Shocking Case

The book tells the difficult case of Stephen Lawrence. It is hard to forget that British law is difficult to understand at times. I would if the case will be clearly analysed, this book gives a very good attempt in doing this.

  • An excellent account

Highly recommended. The details of this case are why it was an extraordinary one. The newspaper coverage only scratches the surface. Absorbing read.
