難しいけど面白い
確か１９９６年にこの本の日本語訳（日経新聞、岡崎久彦監訳）が出版され、読んだのだが、何となく釈然としない箇所があった。今年になって、原書を読むことにしたが、さすがに難しい。しかし、釈然としない箇所が辞書を引きながら原書を読むことで、わかったような気になった。内容は、１６４８年のウエストファリア条約から１９９１年の第１次湾岸戦争まで（＝冷戦終了＋ソ連崩壊）である。遺作となったＬＥＡＤＥＲＳＨＩＰで明確にされているが、キッシンジャーは第１次・第２次世界大戦を「第２次３０年戦争」として一体として捉えていることに留意しながら読むと理解が深まると思う。第２章のアメリカの外交の特性は、現代でも当てはまる（キッシンジャーはこの特性の修正が必要と論じている）ので、ここだけでも読む価値はある。

キッシンジャー 近著 on Chinaに較べ表現が難解か。（こちらの読解力の問題？）ただし、on China と同様、論理それにいたる背景は明快。on Chinaを読んでからこの本に対峙することがおすすめ、とかいいながら、読書は通勤車中のみ、まだ半分にも至っておらず、評論できるような立場にはありませんが。。。

一感想
一年ちょっと前にハードカバーで読みました。キッシンジャーがこの本を書いた目的の一つは、アメリカ外交の「欠点」である、国際関係を道義的・道徳的にのみとらえることの誤りと危険性を、アメリカ人に説きたかったのでしょう。これはアメリカの力が凋落しつつある（と感じられる）現在、キッシンジャーとしては特に切実に感じられたのでしょうか。 もう三十年近く前、若いとき、つまりわたしが今よりもっと無知なとき読んだ本と比較するのは公平ではないかもしれませんが、わたしとしては岡義武著「国際政治史」（岩波）は、キッシンジャーの「外交」と比べると、詳細でもなくページ数ははるかに少ないですが、内容の質からいって決して遜色なく、むしろより的確にポイントをついている思います。 いまなお国際政治の推奨文献にあげられていますが、あのE.H.カーの「危機の二十年」は名著のなかの名著だと思います。岡の本とともに、素人のわたしに推奨する資格があるとすれば、これもぜひお勧めします。
