Reviews

  • A fine novel that gives a bottom-up view of postwar India.

The characters in this book range from a legless beggar to a rich businessman, whose sister rejects his efforts to find her a husband and prefers to work alone as a seamstress. When her sight starts to fail, she hires two tailors with untouchable ancestry and takes in a university student. Over the course of a year these four people become something like a family and find happiness together, but it rests on a fine balance and can easily collapse. In the meantime the reader gets a good look at postwar India from the viewpoints of many different types of people, and perhaps picks up some tips on what to do and what not to do in life.

  • Livro venho em um estado de usado.

Ñ li o livro ainda, mas o jeito q chegou ñ me agradou.

  • Book

    Brilliant tear jerker!

  • A memorable, beautifully written, engaging and at times confronting read.

I really enjoyed this book but it may not be to everyone’s taste. Well written, excellent and interesting characters and engaging insights into the challenging lives of the people involved. At times the story may be too confronting for some but it is told in an honest and detailed manner which does not come across as melodramatic. The story and the lives of the people in it has resonated with me long after it was finished, which is usually a sign, for me, of an excellent book.

  • A Contemporary Classic!
