Every summer, the swallows leave San Juan Capistrano and fly far away, to a peaceful green island -- but they always come back in the spring, on St. Joseph's Day. Juan loves las golondrinas, and so does his friend, Julian, the gardener at the mission. This year, Juan plants a garden in his own yard. There's nothing he wants more than for the swallows to nest there. And on St. Joseph's Day, his dream comes true. Leo Politi is the beloved author and illustrator of Pedro, The Angel of Olvera Street, among many other books for children. Song of the Swallows won the Caldecott Medal in 1950.

  • Wonderful book, illustrations are terrific.

A beautiful story and a beautiful book. It was published long ago and won a Caldecot medal. I read it as a child and bought it for my goddaughter.

  • Five Stars

    Loved this book.

  • that Leo Politi's book is a wonderful story to learn from

Every Californian needs to read this version of early California history, and Spain's settlement of our state. There are so many foreigners in this state from other states, that Leo Politi's book is a wonderful story to learn from. Also, "Song of the Swallows" should become part of each child's library. It will be appreciated as the child grows to adulthood. A visit to a local Mission is also a wonderful trip for anyone after one reads this book. The Missions are part of 3rd grade curriculum in the state of California. How gentle, lovely and loving this story becomes for even a 4 yr. old. This book is part of the Childrens' literature course given by Mt. St. Mary's University for anyone seeking an Elementary Credential from the State of California. Enjoy it over and over, Moms and Dads, aunts, and uncles.

  • Good teaching book

I got this book to teach children about the Swallows Day Festival. Instead of an art project about St. Patrick's Day, I thought I would do something close to home. We live near San Juan Capistano. We are going to make 3D paper swallows and suspend them from the ceiling down the hall at school.

  • Heartwarming and Poignant

Song of the Swallows by Leo Politi is a beautifully illustrated and heartwarming children's book that captures the charm of the swallows’ journey and the essence of community and tradition. The story is simple yet poignant, focusing on themes of nature, migration, and the changing seasons. Politi's illustrations are a standout feature, adding depth and warmth to the narrative. While the plot may be straightforward, it effectively conveys a sense of wonder and connection with nature.
