Once a Mouse...

Marcia Brown

A picture book based on a Hindu fable, it follows a rescued mouse as it changes into a cat, a dog, and then a tiger before learning to remember its own strength. Even as its form changes, the story remains about facing danger and finding a way to stand on one's own.

Work Information

Changing shape does not mean losing the strength that was there all along.

"Once a Mouse," written and illustrated by Marcia Brown, is a fable picture book in which a rescued mouse changes into larger and larger animals before finally confronting what it means to be itself. Using an Indian folktale as its backbone, the book leaves a strong impression with vivid art and spare, direct storytelling.

Marcia Brown retells an Indian fable from the Hitopadesa in this Caldecott Medal–winning tale of a mouse who becomes a tiger. When a small mouse’s life is threatened by large jungle predators, a kindly hermit uses magic to change him into a cat, a dog, and a majestic tiger. But the proud tiger must suffer the consequences when he becomes ungrateful and forgets his humble origins. Marcia Brown’s magical woodcuts bring this Indian fable to life with the mastery that won her a second Caldecott Medal.

Marcia Brown (1918–2015), one of the most honored illustrators in children’s literature, was a three-time Caldecott Medalist and six-time Caldecott Honor illustrator, as well as winner of the Children’s Literature Legacy Award (formerly known as the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award) for the body of her work. She lived in Laguna Hills, California.

  • Great lesson

This book was both an Indian fable and a great opportunity to discuss being thankful with my children. We purchased this to add to our homeschool history unit, and it was probably the one we enjoyed the most. It has it's own, unique style and great pictures as well.
