A National Book Award winner A Newbery Honor Book A Printz Honor Book A clone grapples with his sense of self against the backdrop of the dangerous world of drug trafficking in this acclaimed and internationally bestselling young adult classic about what it means to be human. Matt Alacrán wasn’t born. He was harvested. His DNA came from El Patrón, the drug-lord ruler of the country of Opium. Most people hate and fear clones like Matt—except for El Patrón. El Patrón loves Matt as he loves himself, because Matt is himself. As Matt struggles to understand his existence, he is threatened by a sinister cast of characters, and realizes escape is his only chance to survive. But escape from the Alacrán Estate is no guarantee of freedom.
Nancy Farmer has written three Newbery Honor books: The Ear, the Eye and the Arm ; A Girl Named Disaster ; and The House of the Scorpion , which also won the National Book Award and the Printz Honor. Other books include The Lord of Opium , The Sea of Trolls , The Land of the Silver Apples , The Islands of the Blessed , Do You Know Me , The Warm Place , and three picture books for young children. She grew up on the Arizona-Mexico border and now lives with her family in the Chiricahua Mountains of Arizona.

SOOOO GOOD!
WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS. This book shows that there is no difference between different types of people. It takes place during the main characters childhood, and his first teen years, and it was very interesting and thoughtful to see him change throughout his childhood. It was very inspiring to see the main character hold hope, even in the darkest of times. I wondered why Celia kept Matt locked up in the house, even when she knew Matt was El Patron's clone and once everybody in the "Big House" knew that he was, they would all treat him kindly, but that changed when Maria showed up. I also wonder why clones were considered disgraceful, inferior, bad, deplorable, animal-like, scandalous, despicable and embarrassing. But, all in all, this BOOK IS THE BEST!!! A LOT of talks about drugs. About 12+ or 13+.

I enjoyed this book enormously, I stayed up until 1am just to finish it. It has an intriguing and exciting plot, characters that actually made you feel something and entertaining dialogue. I love the acceptance of Celia, how she loves Matt even though he is different. The only thing I found annoying was how at the end of the book Matt became a human, it made the book lose some of its charm I thought, now the main character is just your run of the mill human. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes their novels a bit out of the ordinary.

My 14 year old read this and insisted that I read it because it was so good. She said that it was the best book she had ever read. I too was utterly blown away by it. So much so that am ordering it as birthday presents of any teens/ pre-teens that I need to buy for. The plot is intricate, clever and is readable partly because it entirely escapes any mawkishness which could otherwise have made it impossible to read, as the heart of the story is so painful. Upbeat ending too. Can't praise it enough.
