Work Information

Behind power as cold as ice, memory and love keep shifting.

This space opera layers the power structure of a planetary state with the emotions of the people living inside it. Its political tension and its themes of love and loss are given equal weight.

As beautiful as she was ancient, Arienrhod ruled Tiamat, whose twin suns circled the Stargate linking her world with the Empire. Now the Stargate was closing, heralding the end of Winter rule.

Reviews

  • The Snow Queen takes the Andersen tale & blows it up to epic proportions. Beautifully written, the characters come across as real people. Every character and situation add to the story. This is the 1st book in a trilogy. The 2nd book is World's End. The 3rd book is The Summer Queen and is the best in the trilogy - incredibly complex; Ms Vinge must have possessed when she wrote it! It is unbelievable that The Snoe Queen is now difficult to find & is not available as an ebook!

  • Read alone without reading other titles quite good otherwise more of the same and lost interest

  • Great novel - first of a 4 book series, though it's fine on its own. This one won the Hugo award when it was new. (Of the others in the series, the Summer Queen is also a must-read, the other two: World's End and Tangled Up in Blue are minor side-pieces).

  • Read this book 30 years ago. Wonderful to find it again. Many thanks
