The Trickster Shift: Humour and Irony in Contemporary Native Art
Allan J. Ryan's study of contemporary Native art uses the trickster as a guide to examine how humor and irony help remake expression and identity.
Work Information
The trickster's laughter shifts the way contemporary Native art is seen.
Surveying artists and works in Canadian Native art, the book reads humor not as decoration but as a cultural strategy. Moving between image and criticism, it changes how the works themselves are seen.

The influence of the "trickster" in contemporary Canadian native art is entwined with cultural sensibilities and expressed through ironic humour. Exploring the trickster's presence, this text allows the artists to offer their own ideas on the creative process and the nature of native humour.

Professor Alan Ryan has captured and shown many of Canadas contemporary artists within this book. Finding the trickster in the art from coyote to Raven or Nanabush makes the art come to life. Art without the three produce life images in contemporary styles or are brought forward in an Indigenous like life.
