Review Summaries
-
Readers enjoy the vivid village atmosphere and Dorothy’s intelligent, slightly sardonic voice. The puzzle is not especially shocking, but the cast’s charm is widely appreciated.

In the finest tradition of the classic British mystery, The Body in the Transept introduces a charming amateur sleuth and lover of outrageous hats, all the secrets and eccentricities of a small town, and a cast of characters whose company will be the pleasure of mystery readers everywhere. For Dorothy Martin, widowed American removed to the England she so loves, the Christmas service is painful enough. It is her first holiday without Frank. And stumbling over the body of Canon Billings does nothing to improve her mood. Of course, she does get to meet Chief Constable Alan Nesbitt, and a good mystery on a chilly English night does have some appeal ...

Dorothy Martin and her husband Frank had planned to move from the USA to their beloved England upon Frank’s retirement. When Frank died she found herself alone in England with no real relationships. Upon leaving a Christmas Eve service she discovered a body in the choir transept between the area of the service in the cathedral and the cloister. This brought out the detective in her and she found herself at odds with the cathedral denizens, the police, and various politicians and influencers who were trying to alter the makeup for the ommunity surrounding the cathedral. As her friendship with a senior police officer grew she was able to use her energy to expose her self t5o danger but also solve the crime. I enjoyed this book and recommend it.

First book in one of my favorite mystery series. An American woman, transplanted to an English cathedral town, becomes involved with a death, apparently in the cathedral. Along the way she makes a new friend, The Chief Constable for Sherebury. Fine characters, excellent plot, delightful setting, all make for a fun read. All the books to come in this series rate 5 stars.

The first in the Dorothy Martin series of mysteries where widowed Dorothy first meets the then Chief Constable Alan Nesbitt, comes head to head with a murderer and discovers her penchant for amateur sleuthing. A delightful mystery with a likeable protagonist in the usually sensible and grounded Dorothy, a colourful cast of characters, well drawn setting, an engaging plot with numerous suspects and generally disliked victims. These books can be read and enjoyed in any order although having read some later books in the series it was nice to go back to where it all began, particularly for character timelines. Enjoyable and immersive reading of the more cosy variety providing entertaining and much needed escapism.
