Review Summaries
-
Many readers enjoy the sheer momentum of the exaggerated storytelling, while others find the roughness and age of the folklore style more divisive.

1938 Newbery Honor Book Bill was just four years old when he fell from the family wagon near the Pecos River on the western frontier. Accidentally left behind by his family, he was raised by coyotes, and he didn't realize he was human until he was an adult. When he did, Pecos Bill returned to civilization and used the superhuman powers he'd developed during his peculiar upbringing to become the best cowboy in the West.

The Facts behind the legend....
So glad to have gotten the True Story of that famous Pecos Bill. Wish that he could have met another hero and legend - Paul Bunyan. The book is in absolutely perfect condition.

Pecos Bill: A Part of Our Oral History
Pecos Bill: The Greatest Cowboy of All Time is a wonderful work that reflects the oral traditions of the old west of the late 1800's. Like Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill is a larger than life character who can break broncos and ride tornadoes in fanciful and colorful ways. These stories are a part of our country's history that is quickly being forgotten; it is our mythology that reveals who we are today and gives us a great view into past values and sensibilities. This book makes good reading for boys 10 and above and provides an opportunity to discuss the role of the "tall tale" in American history.

Pecos Bill, a great story of the American cowboy
I live abroad and was looking for a away to share American literature with my seven year old son. I remembered reading as a kid a couple of American tall tales like Johnny Appleseed and Paul Bunyan, but I was not accaquainted Pecos Bill. I found this book as suggested reading in The Pushcart War and I am glad I bought it. Pecos Bill is essentially the story of how the American cowboy came to be. It is full of good old fashion adventure and kept my son entertained. When we came across cowboy terminology, I used this as an opportunity to show him these things on youtube so that he understood that ranching, roping, rodeos, chaps etc are all real things that exist even today. This is a good read aloud book for children going on 8 to 12. The older the child is the more he or she can understand and take away from it. There is American dialect and slang, which can be a bit tough, but the adult reader can easily explain it. As an adult I also enjoyed the story and liked learning about this part of American heritage.
