Reviews

  • Family Dramas

A good short read, crazy family but silly, rushed ending. Could have expanded a bit more on the love interest.

  • Conquise

  • Out of the Mouths of Babes....

I loved the perspective as seen through the eyes of the young child protagonist Grace. Through her voice this world of a precocious and intuitive biracial girl is heard loud and clear. Loved the author's vivid imagery and the colorful canvas she paints as Grace 's world unfolds. It is a world full with rich back story and intriguing, complex characters ready to leap off the page. Or I should say two worlds Grace will have to learn to navigate and survive in. The story quickly garnered my interest and attention. I look forward to more stories in this series and literary works from this author who is definitely carving out a place for herself as an unique, new voice in literary fiction.

  • A peak into no man's land...

A peak into no man's land...a child's view between acceptance and rejection. Flowing prose...I was easily taken in. 3 stars instead of 4 simply due to grammatical errors within a short story; however I look forward to more from this author. I was ready to keep reading!

  • EVERY MEMOIR SHOULD BE THIS GOOD . . .

Itabari Njeri is a brilliant mind at work on the pages of EVERY GOOD-BYE AIN'T GONE. She does what writers long to do in autobiographies and memoirs. She totally attract the reader by vividly, candidly, and honestly capturing the essence of her life through the characters who help complete it. It's not just a story. It's an interesting journal of Black, female, intellectual life in a time that was curious to all. Aside from the vast array of characters in Njeri's life portrayed in the book, the writer's genius shines through as she pens an amazing historical account that makes this book not only a memoir but a historical feat. I felt as though I was reading Ellison or Wright, and at the same time I seemed to be reading the African American female version of Forrest Gump. Njeri includes just the right moments that make this book tick. Her paths and the paths of her ancestors have crossed with some memorable, iconic figures in African American history, and this makes the book all the more attractive and amazing. I was in awe of the prowess of her writing and the braveness that leaps off the pages of stories told throughout the book. Njeri exemplifies that there is power in our experiences, our words, and in our history. She has written from a place and time that is not just her own. Njeri writes from a place deep inside the history of America, Black America, and women. This book is timeless, and it's a stylistic, terrific example of memoir/autobiographical writing.
