Seminal African American poet Etheridge Knight did not begin writing poetry until a robbery conviction sent him to prison in 1960. A Korean War veteran who suffered a shrapnel wound that led to drug addiction, Knight published his first collection in 1968, Poems from Prison , which set him apart as an important new voice in the Black Arts Movement. His second collection, Belly Songs and Other Poems (1973), earned him Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award nominations, and his third collection, Born of a Woman: New and Selected (1980), was also critically acclaimed. The Essential Etheridge Knight is a selection of the best work by one of the country’s most prominent and still-relevant poets, decades after his death. It brings together poems from Knight’s three previously published books and a section of later poems available only in this collection, which features a striking new cover.
Etheridge Knight (1931–1991) is widely regarded as one of America’s most prominent and compelling poets. His work has been featured in such anthologies as Norton Anthology of American Poets , New Black Poets , and Black Voices , among others.

A revelation
Firstly thanks to Fast Cat books for sending the book out well packaged and posted promptly. I came across Etheridge Knight on a completely unrelated video and not really knowing his work took a chance on a round up of his work in this 'essential' compilation. It is a revelation , so many beautiful poems and haikus, I would recommend this little book to anyone who wanted a primer on his work. The poem that was quoted in the video isn't in this collection so the hunt is on...

Deeply moving.
The poems are accessible, honest and in some cases, heartbreaking.

A Great and Underappreciated Poet
Etheridge Knight lived for a time in my home city of Memphis and I heard him at a couple of readings. When he got going he was unbeatable hearing live -- what a poet! Obviously influenced by the Beats these poems will grab you, shake you, haunt you. Read them and weep. And laugh. And soar with him.

Must read Etheridge Knight.
I'm a big Etheridge Knight Fan, and this includes all my favorites and more. The design is a little standard it kinda seems like a book made for Universities. I still would suggest it though if your looking to learn about gritty, imaginative, and unflinching poetry. He often gets lumped together with Langston Hughes and other african american poets. I think he transcends that genre and makes a style all his own. If you like contemporary writing and poetry, Knight is a must read.
