Dusk and Other Stories
A short-story collection centered on aging, loss, love, and regret. With a spare, lyrical style, it captures daily moments and quietly illuminates the fine-grained emotions beneath them.
Work Information
A lyrical collection that traces aging and loss.
These stories compress the small emotions of aging, love, and regret into a terse style. By isolating ordinary moments, they let the weight of time and loss quietly emerge.

The book came in excellent condition and on time. Salter is a superbly insightful writer. Each sentence is crafted with sensitivity and perfection while seeming to flow with such deliberation. This book is for anyone who wants great stories done perfectly and for the literary who want to learn about their craft at its best.

Suggested for for a book group I attend, this was a challenging read but ultimately rewarding. I found I had to re-read each story immediately for it to reveal itself, for the ironies to come more fully into play. Most members of our group didn't get that far and rejected the stories out of hand. A great pity. These are stories of wounded, disconnected people who don't have the means to help themselves. They are lost, some are perverse, some angry, and very often mysterious to this reader trying to make sense. The central story, 'Cinema' if I remember correctly, still retains much of its mystery to me, but I will return to it. The final 'Dirt' is harrowing: one character is a John Williams' 'Stoner' but without his chances, education and lucidity, a man who can barely manage to get words out. This may sound like a Beckett play, but in this story there isn't any of Beckett's sense of fun. A grim read for a grim world. James Salter's prose is beautifully managed, the signs leading the reader to her conclusions very deeply embedded like microscopic pieces of grit that niggle till you see their point. I hope to James Salter when life allows me the leisure to do so.
