Karen Solie launched to prominence with her first collection of poems, Short Haul Engine (2001), finalist for the Griffin Poetry Prize and winner of many other awards and citations. She continued her upward trajectory with Modern and Normal (2005), and is now considered one of Canada's best poets. Pigeon is yet another leap forward for this singer of existential bewilderment. These poems are X-rays of our delusions and mistaken perceptions, explorations of violence, bad luck, fate, creeping catastrophe, love, and the eros of danger. Once again, Solie shows that her ear is impeccable, her poetic intelligence rare and razor-sharp.
KAREN SOLIE grew up in southwest Saskatchewan. Her five previous collections of poetry- Short Haul Engine , Modern and Normal , Pigeon , The Road In Is Not the Same Road Out , and The Caiplie Caves -have won the Dorothy Livesay Award, Pat Lowther Award, Trillium Poetry Prize, and the Griffin Prize, and been shortlisted for the Derek Walcott Prize and the T.S. Eliot Prize. A 2023 Guggenheim Fellow, she teaches half-time for the University of St Andrews in Scotland and lives the rest of the year in Canada.

Karen Solie's poetic intelligence is one of the highest we've ever seen. She has that rare gift of sentient conscientiousness, the deeply felt sense of what is right, that distinguishes all great poets. In a relatively short time, she has garnered two Griffin Poetry Prizes nominations and a win in 2010 for PIDGEON. Hear her read "MIgration" here: [...]. Her work is internationally recognized, as evidenced by our cover photo in the Autumn 2012 issue of Poetry London. Read her poem "The Road In Is Not the Same Road Out" here: [...]. I expect that we have only seen the tip of the iceberg and that her poetry will only get better.

Karen Solie represented Canada at the poetry event held during the London Olympics - she was an excellent choice (and the collection of all the countries' readings is wonderful)
