Mountain Born (Pennant)
Set around a family of sheep farmers in the high country, it traces how a boy grows into responsibility through hard work and close-knit community life. The changing seasons and the texture of daily labor give the story a quiet, steady emotional force.

A boy in a family of sheep farmers raises a black lamb to be the leader of the flock.
For Elizabeth Yates, the story of Peter and his little black cosset began long before she ever wrote it. In her early years the life on her father's large farm gave her a feeling for the land, for animals, and for the people who have both in their care. Many of her experiences found their way into the story, including the joy she felt when she could bury her nose in her own sweater, made of wool spun as it came from the sheep's back. Miss Yates drew inspiration from her hours spent with a New Hampshire shepherd, and, she observes, sheep shepherds, and their ways have not much changed from the days when David cared for his flock on a hillside in Judea. Her story could have taken place in any mountain pasture, in any alpine meadow around the world.

This was a great read aloud with my 6yo. He enjoys outdoor adventure stories. This book also has a strong, wise, kind male character that is great for young boys to read about.

Endearing story. My children really enjoyed this as a read aloud.

O livro é muito bom e a qualidade do papel é excelente. Ótimo para quem deseja praticar o inglês, ou conhecer melhor a história americana e apreciar contos de época.

I read this to my 6 year old. Both of us enjoyed the story. There were a few parts I had to skim over (docking the sheep tail) b/c we are both sensitive. Overall a great story about growing up, gaining responsibility and seasons of life.

This was an enjoyable children’s story about a shepherd family. I learned things about shepherds that helped me understand the explanations in the Bible a bit more. This wasn’t an overtly Christian story though the Bible was mentioned as the only book that the old shepherd’s (he worked for the family the story was about) family owned. I recommend it but I feel many of today’s children won’t appreciate it as much. It made a nice read aloud though!
