Work Information

Fragmented language carries the city’s pain and prayer at once.

Andrés Montoya’s first collection moves through urban decay, labor, and violence toward prayer and recovery. Though brief, it leaves a lasting impression through image and rhythm.

Reviews

  • I have read poetry now for twenty years and this collection by Andres Montoya is one I will keep coming back to. His verses are stories that describe with such raw passion a vocal despair for a deeper human connection. I am a poet and his words inspire me, in fact they literally pushed me back onto the chair and he pulled my switch...man he was my executioner with his heart piercing renditions. "The Ice Worker Considers Mercy and Grace" was my favorite. It is brilliant. Every Christian should read this poem. I will be entering the Andres Montoya Institute for Latino Studies 2014 Poetry Prize contest because of Andres. We would be speaking of him like we do of Cisneros if he were living. We still should. • It is so sad that Andres Montoya left this world at such a young age. Aside from the obvious loss suffered by his family and friends (I never had the pleasure of meeting him), we wonder about the poetry and other writing he would have produced in the wake of his beautiful and accomplished collection, "the iceworker sings." Much has been written about Montoya's first book which was the winner of the 1997 Chicano/Latino Literary Prize (University of California at Irvine). Montoya's Fresno is filled with love, lust, hate, suffering and protest sung in a clear Chicano voice. Suffice it to say that the brutal yet eloquent honesty of Montoya's poems has assured that "the iceworker sings" will be read and studied for decades to come.

  • I don't remember if you listed the book as exlibrary, I don't mind it being an exlibrary book. I would just have liked if you would have listed it in your description. Over all good service and product A+.

  • I knew the author and had heard him recite his own poetry. He was amazingly elequent. He was very harsh as a reviewer, but spoke from the heart. He will be missed.
