I'm EFFING SORRY (Contains spoilers)
The first time I read The House on Mango Street was in Year 6, when I was just 12 years old. At that time, I was beginning to grapple with difficult concepts like rape, and the story deeply disturbed me in ways I couldn’t fully understand. My encounter with the book was overwhelming and unprepared for—I was handed a story with heavy, complex themes but given no guidance or context to help me process it. Looking back, I see this as a missed opportunity for meaningful engagement. When I was asked for my thoughts on the book, I wrote that I didn’t understand Esperanza or why she would ever return to Mango Street. I even suggested, in my naivety, that if she did come back, it should be with a “war car thing.” I received a bad grade for my response, and I now realize that my reaction was rooted in frustration, fear, and a lack of the tools needed to grasp the book’s nuance. At the time, I gave the book a 0.5-star review, pouring all my anger and confusion into that rating. I remember many similar reviews from young students like me who felt hurt, scared, and misunderstood. Now, at 22, I’ve returned to this book, and I see it in a completely different light. It’s a powerful and honest story, filled with nuance and raw emotion that went over my head as a child. I feel terrible for my initial judgment and how I failed to appreciate what the book was trying to convey. If schools continue to assign this book to young readers, I hope they do so with care, providing the necessary guidance to help students navigate its challenging themes. Without that support, many like me may leave feeling confused, scared, personally "offended as a boy", and unfairly critical of a book that deserves much more care, thought and understanding.

easily one of my favorites
This is a wonderfully written slim little book that will warm your heart. Written in short vignettes each little chapter adds to the whole Chicago neighborhood which you become a part of. Definitely a book worth sharing with friends and coming back to from time to time.

Great little book
Great little book. Take it as a coming of age story almost like a lazy diary. It is written with a accent so some of the phrasing will require understanding but it projects authenticity. Essential read if you enjoy flash fiction and short stories. The way the author writes condenses so much into so little. Clever, thought provoking and an education. Definitely worth it.
