Mother Departs
An autobiographical farewell to the author's mother, Stefania, built from memoir, poetry, and fragments of recollection. It is both a family record and a meditation on grief and inheritance.
Work Information
To speak of the mother is to trace the self.
Anchored in a tribute to the mother, it quietly crosses war, poverty, family history, and the limits and necessity of writing. It is an intimate, densely layered book that moves between prose and poetry.
Review Summaries
-
Readers tend to value its intimacy, sorrow, and the way poetry and prose interlock. Even in fragmentary form, it leaves a strong sense of loss.

I am guessing that much has been lost in translation, but it is an excellent memoire by a writer who somehow survived the worst of human behaviour. A privilege to be able to read and re-read.

Anyone who has lost a mother will find comfort in the varied ways Tadeusz pays tribute to her. At the same time this personal journey is enriched by the opening he provides to Polish history and social life as well as poetry.

cheaper than on flipkart and pages quality is good. thanks...

This volume by the off beat Polish playwright and poet is a change of pace from his works. He weaves together letters, poetic segments, etc. to reminisce about his childhood and his mother's strengths. Poverty is similar world wide but unique for each family and his is interesting. Nothing exciting and new but a strong sweet ending. Easy to read, it would work well in the cramped seats of airplanes now.

Emotional mixture of poetry and prose giving a vivid flavour of Poland pre and post war. Some pieces were written by Rozewicz's mother about her life in a poor village. Rozewicz has died recently and is the last of a tragic generation who fought in the resistance against the Nazis, and then suffered the Communist repression. This work is all the more precious because of that.
