Helping a Stranger
With "Wolf in the Snow" Matthew Cordell proves that not only is he one of the best illustrators working today, but that he is also creating the best work of his prolific career. "Wolf in the Snow" is a beautiful and heartfelt story about two wayward pups caught in a blizzard. On her way home from school a young girl finds a wolf pup separated from her pack, just as an incoming snow storm reaches its zenith. Our hero is faced with the timely dilemma of ignoring the animal and going home to the warmth and comfort of her parent's cabin, or risking her own safety to help a stranger. The Goodness of this book is evidenced in the way the girl doesn't think twice about what the correct course of action is. Helping a stranger isn't one option of many, but the ONLY option. What's especially impressive about this story isn't necessarily that it's told entirely without words (though this a major accomplishment), but the balance Cordell is able to strike between his familiar cartoon style and a greater sense of realism and danger. This is a book with stakes, full of humor and empathy.

Wonderful picture book. Used this for my small class of autistic 11 year olds. Perfect for helping them to use and develop their language & story telling skills. They loved the stunning art work and the emotions the pictures display.
