Work Information

The ponies shaped by sea and wind rise to the center of the story alongside the children's hopes.

Set against the pony herds of Chincoteague Island, the story follows Paul and Maureen as they become captivated by the wild mare Phantom and her colt Misty, and begin to hope they can one day bring them home. The rhythms of island life, the bustle of Pony Penning, and the ache of letting go of the wild are all drawn with a bright, vivid touch.

Review Summaries

  • Many readers remember the seaside setting and the affection for the ponies most strongly. The old-fashioned storytelling can divide opinion, but the warmth and sense of adventure continue to carry the book.

Marguerite Henry’s beloved story of a wild horse’s gentle colt—winner of a Newbery Honor! On the island of Chincoteague, off the coasts of Virginia and Maryland, lives a centuries-old band of wild ponies. Among them is the most mysterious of all, Phantom, a rarely-seen mare that eludes all efforts to capture her—that is, until a young boy and girl lay eyes on her and determine that they can’t live without her. The frenzied roundup that follows on the next Pony Penning Day does indeed bring Phantom into their lives, in a way they never would have suspected. Phantom would forever be a creature of the wild. But her gentle, loyal colt Misty is another story altogether...

Marguerite Henry (1902–1997) was the beloved author of such classic horse stories as King of the Wind , Misty of Chincoteague , and Stormy, Misty’s Foal , and her work has won several Newbery Awards and Honors. Wesley Dennis was best known for his illustrations in collaboration with author Marguerite Henry. They published sixteen books together.

Reviews

  • Good!

It's a pretty good book, but I kept feeling bad for Maureen. It's always her brother Paul who gets to be the hero, and never her. I liked how each person really had a personality, and felt ALIVE. I recommend this to horse lovers of all ages. It's a little sad, but it's still good!

  • Read this as a child, and it is just as lovely now. The print is large and an easy read.

  • Lovely story

  • How many of us horse-crazy people grew up with Marguerite Henry's stories? I think Misty is the best of them all, especially because of its message to let the wild stay wild. The only criticism I have is of the often condescending treatment of Maureen, which I find annoying. Even the illustrations show her as second-class citizen.

  • , A nice old book. The condition was fine and the delivery as promised. I used to read all of Marguerite Henry books and was happy to find one to send to my niece in Austria!

  • I bought this as I had read it hundreds of times as a child. The book was in the condition as described, and the story has brought back meny happy memories of the times I read it so many decades ago.
