Smoky knows only one way of life: freedom. Living on the open range, he is free to go where he wants and to do what he wants. And he knows what he has to do to survive. He can beat any enemy, whether it be a rattlesnake or a hungry wolf. He is as much a part of the Wild West as it is of him, and Smoky can't imagine anything else. But then he comes across a new enemy, one that walks on two legs and makes funny sounds. Smoky can't beat this enemy the way he has all the others. But does he really want to? Or could giving up some of his freedom mean getting something in return that's even more valuable?

William Roderick James was an artist and writer of the American West. He is known for writing Smoky the Cowhorse, for which he won the Newbery Medal, and numerous "cowboy" stories for adults and children.

Reviews

  • I decided a few years ago to attempt to read all the Newbery books. Smoky the Cowhorse of course was on that list. Wow what a great read. I have to admit I spent the end crying as I usually do with animal stories. What a great book. I highly recommend.

  • I was a kid lovesick for horses. I was lucky enough to be able to ride and spent every waking hour with those ponies. I read every horse book I could get my paws on and played endlessly with my Breyers. I don't know if it was my knowledge of horses and their behavior that made this book so vivid in imagery for me, or if it truly is written so well, but reading it again 30 years later, my heart is just as full. It is a must have for every lovesick horse kid out there and I will treasure it always and pass it down to my son. Thank you Will James

  • Thrilling and sad but satisfying at the end. A wonderful book. Will James was a great story teller. A beautiful horse story. Be ready to be thrilled and cry…..because you will.

  • One of the best western authors. Although I haven't yet read it I have scanned it. Perfect for that cowboy story.
