The Story of Mankind by Hendrik van Loon is the perfect companion to get you started on and interested in world history. Written almost one hundred years ago (in 1921), it still provides a good introduction for anyone wanting to take their first steps into learning about many of the events that shaped the world that we live in today. The level of writing suggests the book was initially written with the young adult in mind. But I have read that the book became popular among parents who had initially bought the book for their children. What makes The Story of Mankind worth reading is van Loon's approach to the subject and choice of topics the covered. After reading the short but inspiring introduction on how, as a child, van Loon became interested in history, you are taken in a series of short chapters (each taking approximately 15 minutes to read) through a history of the world in a truly engaging manner. The book is not meant to be a serious, academic read. For one, it contains many of van Loon's childlike drawings. But this in no undermines the work, for the book is an entertaining read, due mainly to van Loon's unique prose style and drawings; all of which is highly admirable. The result is a book that never gets boring. From start to finish it is truly enjoyable and informative throughout. Better in fact than many of the history books written today. Because the book was written nearly a century ago, some of the information is now out of date, depending on which area or aspect of history you are looking at. But this is not to discredit the book in any way, as this book will whet your appetite and, hopefully, create an enthusiasm and love of the subject. In fact after reading van Loon I'm sure (like me) you'll want to dip into the subject even further, even if it's just to see how history has changed since van Loon's time. The book was also the first winner of the Newbery Medal in 1922 for its outstanding contribution to children's literature. And it is still a classic read today. I fully recommend Hendrik van Loon's The Story of Mankind. I hope you find my review helpful.
