This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate
This nonfiction book treats climate change as a crisis that demands economic and political reorganization, not something market logic can solve.
Work Information
The climate crisis forces the premises of the economy to change.
The author argues that free-market ideology has intensified warming and connects emissions cuts, social movements, and the rebuilding of justice. The climate crisis is treated as a question of power as much as of environment.

The most important book yet from the author of the international bestseller The Shock Doctrine, a brilliant explanation of why the climate crisis challenges us to abandon the core “free market” ideology of our time, restructure the global economy, and remake our political systems. In short, either we embrace radical change ourselves or radical changes will be visited upon our physical world. The status quo is no longer an option. In This Changes Everything Naomi Klein argues that climate change isn’t just another issue to be neatly filed between taxes and health care. It’s an alarm that calls us to fix an economic system that is already failing us in many ways. Klein meticulously builds the case for how massively reducing our greenhouse emissions is our best chance to simultaneously reduce gaping inequalities, re-imagine our broken democracies, and rebuild our gutted local economies. She exposes the ideological desperation of the climate-change deniers, the messianic delusions of the would-be geoengineers, and the tragic defeatism of too many mainstream green initiatives. And she demonstrates precisely why the market has not—and cannot—fix the climate crisis but will instead make things worse, with ever more extreme and ecologically damaging extraction methods, accompanied by rampant disaster capitalism. Klein argues that the changes to our relationship with nature and one another that are required to respond to the climate crisis humanely should not be viewed as grim penance, but rather as a kind of gift—a catalyst to transform broken economic and cultural priorities and to heal long-festering historical wounds. And she documents the inspiring movements that have already begun this process: communities that are not just refusing to be sites of further fossil fuel extraction but are building the next, regeneration-based economies right now. Can we pull off these changes in time? Nothing is certain. Nothing except that climate change changes everything. And for a very brief time, the nature of that change is still up to us.
Naomi Klein is an award-winning journalist, columnist, and author of the New York Times and international bestsellers The Shock Doctrine , No Logo , This Changes Everything, and No Is Not Enough . A Senior Correspondent for The Intercept , reporter for Rolling Stone , and contributor for both The Nation and The Guardian , Klein is the inaugural Gloria Steinem Endowed Chair in Media, Culture, and Feminist Studies at Rutgers University. She is co-founder of the climate justice organization The Leap.

Why we haven't change anything?
This book clearly describes why we haven't make any clear difference on climate crisis, instead keep emitting carbon dioxide and making the earth warmer and warmer. Carbon credit (Market mechanism) , any miracle high tech or super entrepreneur won't stop climate change unless we radically change what we used to think and act so far. So rather than spending our effort on these ill-fated approach, we must change this. I can highly recommend this book to those who want to solve climate crisis. However, as the critic said, this book seems not be powerful enough to change those who believe capitalism. That is why we must take action from grassroots.

A goldmine of information
It is a global perspective on climate change and how capitalism had become a source of malice or an engine that drive rapacious and unscrupulous corporate competition -- in some or in many cases driving communities apart with an etched slogan 'individualism',,all of which are being weaved together through a web of policies mostly in favor of fossil fuel. Read this book to see how can the global energy system be transitioned to a responsible clean energy that won't hurt jobs, but can create just as many, you be the judge.

Time to get a move on!
Our planet is dying: our Earth, our one and only beautiful blue planet, is rapidly becoming less able to sustain life. This Changes Everything is a brilliantly written, accessible, thoroughly researched, and convincing account of climate change that offers hope. It doesn't have to happen: there is still a narrowing window of time in which we can reverse the processes and a global grassroots movement is gathering determined to bring about the necessary change. Everyone has a part to play: it can no longer be left to remote authority. The writing has long been on the wall. Before Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the UN, declared climate change the most serious problem confronting humankind, reports by august scientific institutions and global charities had warned about the menacing developments and been brushed aside by public and politicians. Prevailing economics and business with strong political support allied to bury the problem and worked to cast doubt on the authoritative scientific conclusions. In the 1980s, under President Reagan US environmental agencies and their staff were sidelined and disempowered. Even now the BBC treats UKIP with more respect than the Green Party. Yet the message is proving correct: we are living beyond our means. We depend on global commons and are behaving like a flock of voracious goats, consuming and polluting the future of humankind. Our conventional economies based on extractive industries, use of carbon-based energy sources, and aimed at economic growth are incompatible with the survival of life on earth and everywhere the canaries are falling silent and dropping off their perches. Wildlife has been reduced by 50% in 40 years. In London, Hallowe'en 2014 was the warmest every recorded (32 deg C on my balcony) and delightfully sunny - what's not to like? That some effects of global warming are positive - they can plant forests in Iceland where none were possible and the UK has the beginnings of a wine industry - confuses the issue. In the long term there is only catastrophe if we go on as we are doing. Naomi Klein has pursued her subject through the corruption of US environmental charities by big energy, the WTO, conferences of deniers, an alarming meeting of climate changers, polluting mines, oil wells, fracking sites, pipelines and everywhere finds opposition that is highly active, often successful, and growing worldwide. Small communities threatened by politically supported energy companies can seldom prevail and only a massive global grassroots movement can exert sufficient pressure to force the necessary comprehensive change in the whole political, economic, and business nexus including energy companies, extractive industries, the agreements and rules of the World Trade Organisation and much more. I found it difficult to put down Naomi Klein's book which is as hard-hitting and thought-provoking as No Logo and the Shock Doctrine. It is easy to despair of the whole situation, and she finds reason for real hope. Catastrophe is not inevitable. A global coalition is building of environmental organisations large and small. This book is addressed to the intelligent and concerned grassroots: we, the people have to act for the future where power and authority have failed. It's the right message and just in time. The movement is off the ground, but it's a long way to go and we have to get a move on.

Please consider reading this book. Whether you agree or disagree it will be a page turner.
I'm old and I don't have any kids, but somehow I still care about what happens to people in the next few years and even about what happens after I'm gone. There's a lot of unnecessary suffering that will likely be coming along sooner rather than later due to our unsustainable habits. There is still the possibility of having a reasonably comfortable future if we take stock of what's explained so clearly in this book. However it seems that there's not much time remaining to change our course. I hope you'll read this book. It could make a difference. We might not have to look back and think about what might have been possible. But it seems that we're down to the point where every month that goes by of sitting on the fence and diddling is going to multiply the suffering many fold. I don't think it has to work out that way. Many thanks to Naomi Klein for making the effort to inform us.

a must read with one thing missing
Naomi has written from her heart a "cannot put down" series of stories that are truly impactful. Makes me want to do something. I will. Very well researched with hundreds of references spanning numerous facets of life. One thing I think is missing though. The call for each of us to do something simple like boycott fossil fuels - first for a day/ month, then 2, 3 and so one until we are off the stuff. I sold my car and rarely drive, I sold my big house and live in a half-sized, more efficient apartment close to work. And Lord willing, I will cut back my meat eating by 80% or more as my New Year's resolution. If each of us took these kinds of steps, it would not be enough, but it would be a tsunami to the fossil fuel and financial sectors. Or maybe this call is not missing from Naomi's book. Maybe she has set us up for just such a change in ourselves! Bless you Naomi! You encouraged me to do even more! Nelson Lee Climate Steward

fondamentale
