Neil Gaiman's award-winning novella The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains is a haunting story of family, the otherworld, and a search for hidden treasure, and was serialised on BBC Radio 4's Book at Bedtime in November 2015. 'Gaiman's achievement is to make the fantasy world seem true' ( The Times ). Neil Gaiman is the bestselling author of The Ocean at the End of the Lane and the epic American Gods , whose storytelling genius will appeal to fans of J.K. Rowling and George R.R. Martin. The text of The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains was first published in the collection Stories: All New Tales (Headline, 2010). This gorgeous full-colour illustrated book version was born of a unique collaboration between writer Neil Gaiman and artist Eddie Campbell, who brought to vivid life the characters and landscape of Gaiman's story. In August 2010, The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains was performed in the concert hall of the Sydney Opera House to a sell-out crowd - Gaiman read his tale live as Campbell's magnificent artwork was presented, scene by scene, on large screens. Narrative and art were accompanied by live music composed and performed especially for the story by the FourPlay String Quartet.

Neil Gaiman is the No.1 Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling writer of books, graphic novels, short stories, film and television for all ages, and is known for creating extraordinary worlds beyond imagination. He has been awarded numerous literary honours and many of his books have been made into films and adapted for TV and radio. In recent years, Neil wrote and was the showrunner for a critically acclaimed television adaptation of Good Omens , the seminal novel he co-authored with the late Sir Terry Pratchett. He has also written two episodes of Doctor Who and appeared in The Simpsons as himself. In 2017, Neil became a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. He received a Doctor of Letters from the University of St Andrews, is a Professor in the Arts at Bard College and is a Royal Society of Literature fellow. Born in the UK, Neil now mostly lives in America, and travels all around the world every year appearing at festivals, events and conventions.

Reviews

  • This is the second audio book I have listened to via Scribd on the iOS app, while the app could use some work, the story and the narration were awesome. I now want to get the e-book so I can see the illustrations that go with the story. I've said it before and I'm saying it again.... Neil Gaiman is an amazing storyteller and after listening to this I want to go back and relisten to Neverwhere, Stardust, Ocean at the End of the Lane...pretty much all of his stories that he narrates. My review of this is short as is the story (but it still packs quite the punch), an evocative story of revenge and death with fabulous narration that is accompanied with a string quartet playing in the background. This quote from the story as it really stood out to me "Sometimes I think the truth is a place, In my mind, it is like a city: there can be a hundred roads, a thousand paths, that will all take you, eventually, to the same place. It does not matter where you come from. If you walk toward the truth, you will reach it, whatever path you take" ..................... "You are wrong. The truth is a cave in the black mountains. There is one way there, and one only, and the way is treacherous and hard, and if you choose the wrong path you will die alone, on the mountainside"

  • "I will not forgive myself for the year that I hated my daughter..." This is my favourite book of the year. Yep, there. I said it. I read it in one sitting, and I could have read it again and again and again. It left me reeling. I finished the book, closed it, and the first thing out of my mouth was, "Oh my God..." I was breathless, and overjoyed that I found a book that could still make me react this way! What an amazing story. It made me feel like a child again. We start out with that great opening, about a father who can pretty much forgive himself for anything, except for that year he hated his daughter. At that point we don't understand why or how or what or anything. We are simply taken onto this journey as he begins his search for a cave in the black mountains. This father who is barely bigger than a child in size, is actually strong and clever. He is able to convince a man to guide him to that cave, knowing that the man has been there many years before. This man agrees, but refuses to go into the cave with him. The cave is said to have so much gold, but when you come out of it, you are forever changed, as if a part of your soul is dead. Throughout this journey we learn many things about both man and midget, and the ending is so dark and twisted, I was on the edge of my seat. Absolutely wonderful. Bravo Neil Gaiman. I am SO impressed.

  • awesome it was.......great thriller......

  • If you like Neil Gaiman and his dark narrations you will like this one too. I would only wish not to have to restart the audio every chapter.

  • Neil Gaiman is so creative. Is there a genre he has not tackled successfully? This small tale is an example of Gaiman's ability to genre bend. For children and the child within us all this beautifully illustrated book is well worth the investment.
