Winner of the American Book Award Dana Gioia, an internationally known poet and critic, is notably prolific with his essays, reviews, translations, and anthologies. But like his celebrated teacher, Elizabeth Bishop, Gioia is meticulously painstaking and self-critical about his own poems. In an active 25-year career he has published only two previous volumes of poetry. Although Gioia is often recognized as a leading force in the recent revival of rhyme and meter in American poetry, his own work does not fit neatly into any one style. Interrogations at Noon displays an extraordinary range of style and sensibility—from rhymed couplets to free verse, from surrealist elegy to satirical ballad. What unites the poems is not a single approach but their resonant musicality and powerful but understated emotion. This new collection explores the uninvited epiphanies of love and marriage, probing the quiet mysteries of a seemingly settled domestic life. Meditating on the inescapable themes of lyric poetry—time, mortality, nature, and the contradictions of the human heart—Gioia turns them to provocative and unexpected ends.
An acclaimed poet, essayist, anthologist, BBC commentator, and critic, Dana Gioia is the author of three books of poems, the pioneering essay collection Can Poetry Matter? , and Nosferatu , a libretto. He was recently nominated to be Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts and lives in Santa Rosa, California, with his family.

刺激的ではないが、多くの詩が水準以上の質である
アンソロジーで読んだことのある詩があり、もう少し本格的に読もうと思い購入。刺激的ではないが、優雅に味わいにある詩を多く含んでいる詩集と思った。

thrilling from the first entry. refreshingly insightful while keeping an eye on formal poetry. I've now purchased 3 for random gifts, as well as all other offerings by Gioia here on Amazon.

Delighted to have received and am enjoying this boo.

Dana Gioia's poetry is incredible. The first way I can say that is I promise it won't be vague at all — for instance, like saying something as ineffable as poetry is "incredible." I'm always torn when reading it, and then torn again when deciding whether or not to underline. I want to leave it unbesmirched (not a word, I know — I'm telling, you read Gioia's poetry as an antidote to this review!) but I want to remember when I look at these lines again. Or maybe it's better to come fresh every time. Gioia is known for specificity and language and rhythm and cadence. Also for rhymes, but he's as comfortable without as with. I've heard him speak once, and M has hosted him at the university where she works: he thinks A LOT about poetry, and work, and art, and effort. This produces a book of poems abut once every eight years or so. There are three others — and the first is running in the $30 range from the used book universe. And you will use this book. That's a given. But you decide whether to underline.

Indeed, there really seems to be a hidden depth behind Gioia's poems. Even if they don't penetrate on the first reading, something echos and I return, and find a voice speaking which feels a lot like my own, though my own would be far less eloquent. Gioia's humanity speaks to my humanity, and in many of his "interrogations" I feel a kindred spirit.
-
My bias is toward poets who are more direct in what they are saying. This work I found a mix of stunning and hard to grasp poems. Still, the poems that reached me were enough to make me want to of this talented poet.
