Flood!: A Novel in Pictures
A graphic novel that renders urban collapse and reconfiguration as an almost wordless visual sequence, letting crisis unfold through images.
Work Information
It tells the city’s crisis through images more than words.
Through sequences of images, the book conjures a city caught in disaster. It is apocalyptic in mood, but its visual momentum never lets up.

Dark Horse Comics is proud to be reprinting this American Book Award winner, Flood! , a powerful graphic novel by the socially and politically conscious illustrator Eric Drooker, frequent cover artist for the New Yorker and contributor to World War III Illustrated . Flood! is a modern novel written in the ancient language of pictures, and its expressionist graphics hold a film noir edge. Long out of print and now at its tenth anniversary, Flood! conveys all the joys and sadness that intermingle in our large cities and gives us a look at a possible future. This edition features a new introduction by historian and poet Luc Sante, a new cover by Drooker, and a complete re-design. This reprint of Flood! will coincide with the release of Drookers follow-up graphic novel, Blood Song: A Silent Ballad , from Harcourt Brace.

Haunting, Disturbing, and Fascinating
I'd read an earlier edition of this book and like it very much. Although the description says: "A Novel In Pictures" there are really three discrete stories told in this book. The stories involve a factory worker who looses his job, a man who has weird vision on a subway, and a cartoonist who draws an apocalyptic depiction of a flood while it is actually happening all around him. Although the main characters look similar, and they seem to be Mr. Drooker's alter egos--after a 2nd reading I realized that they are not the same people. So I think it would be more accurate to say 3 Novellas In Pictures to be more accurate. I like Mr. Drooker's artistic style--this edition of Flood has an interview with the author and bonus pictures from some of his other works, plus a cool 3D effect on the cover. If you have an earlier version of this book I don't think that the extra material contributes much to the overall stories; for those who have never read it I recommend this version over the earlier ones. If you have any of the older editions, however, you'll have to decide whether the bonus material and nice hard cover presentation is worth the price of admission. Haunting, disturbing, and fascinating this book is not for the squeamish or prudish. There are pretty graphic depictions of sex, so I'd not recommend it for young people. It is not a "happy" book, but if you're looking for something thought provoking and very unique then I suggest your give it a whirl.

Great book!
Pictures tell more than 1000 words! Oh yes so true for Eric Drooker's novels. Drooker is not only a great artist, but also a great storyteller. The quality of this book is also very satisfying.

Don't go gentle into Eric Drooker's books
There is no artist who shakes me awake more than the visual work of Eric Drooker. His glowing covers have often appeared on The New Yorker, but it is his ominous images that resonate, that go beyond the masks. FLOOD is just one of his vital books. If you haven't looked into the brilliant and wise array of Eric Drooker's paintings, drawings and reverse etchings, and in particular, FLOOD, what the hell are you waiting for?
