Winner of the 2023 Shirley Jackson Award for Best Novella Jada Morris was the fierce and resilient leader of a social movement against the theft of young women’s uteruses before she committed a violent crime. Now, in 2040, the 24-year-old is serving time at The Center for Future Leaders, an alternative to prison for young leaders who committed crimes as a response to gender-based violence. The Center supposedly provides training, education, therapy, and reduced sentences to the convicted in order to return them to their communities as leaders. But as Jada begins her therapy, she realizes all is not as it seems, and memory is thorny at best. Can she trust her android therapist and the terrifying path down which she’s taking her? And what will she find at the other end? Jordan’s novella is a gripping and terrifying look at our reproductive future that sends shudders through our reproductive present.

Brilliant Critique of Allyship in a Post-Roe World
I knew when I read the title "To the Woman in the Pink Hat" would be a wild ride and LaToya Jordan does not disappoint. Her gripping novella interrogates the meaning of true allyship in a post-Roe world. In 2040, young women of color will be targeted by Eugenia, an unethical corporation determined to increase the white birthrate by preventing Black and brown babies from being conceived. Our heroine Jada is the leader of a group of women whose uteri have been stolen and she takes drastic steps to fight back against the system. Jada's anger at her predicament is palpable and I experienced every emotion along with her -- to the pain of loss and devastation of being unable to conceive to the joy of baking coconut cake with her mom. LaToya Jordan's world-building is impeccable, capturing how frightening AI could be in the hands of nefarious folks and how medical racism will persist decades from now with new tech. "To the Woman in the Pink Hat" not only examines how oppressed POCx will rise up against corrupt regimes who want to erase our past and future, but it also asks us to take a critical look at the fight for repro justice in the not-to-distant future and if our true rivals are the ones we call sisters. A must-read!

Absorbing Page Turner!
I hankered for an engrossing page turning book and To the Woman in the Pink Hat fit the bill. Set in 2040, the book centers on Jada, a 24 y.o. who is in a diversion program instead of prison for a crime she committed. I loved all of the details of this dystopian society, particularly the social ones. A lot of the struggles, strifes, and horrors felt plausible and realistic. Highly recommend this novella by LaToya Jordan, a winner of a Shirley Jackson Award.

Compelling and Chilling Novella
This is a chilling and compelling look at a dystopian but all too realistic future, where POCx who committed gender-based crimes are given a different pathway than prison. Though this novella is short, there is a lot to unpack here. I found Jada to be incredibly relatable, even though my experiences are worlds away from hers. Confronting the idea of how certain people are treated, especially women and those who identify as women, and then especially persons of colour, and what people do in their darkest hours, and then subsequently looking at what their potential is, really is fascinating and terrifying and so important given the current climate. I’d say this is a must read, and I would love to see a full-length novel about the Center and the Leaders it “creates.”

Fascinating an engaging
I am not the best review writer, but I have to say this was a great read! I’m a big fan of futuristic fiction and Jordan’s novella did not disappoint. She provided a comprehensive background for the characters and events that preceded the action with just enough detail, and the plot was gripping with an ending that was as surprising as it was inescapable. The characters were captivating and I would love to see a next installment!

This novella is certainly a conversation starter and absolutely thought-provoking. I would love to see this as a series as I am sitting here wondering what happens next for the protagonist and supporting characters. Brava, LaToya Jordan!
