The book came just as the description in the amazon listing - hardcover, very good quality, and the Dust Jacket intact. Thanks.

This is an excellent crime novel - a second winning work from the author of two Gold DAgger Awards. Published in 1970 it centres round a selfish, amoral young man. He is involved in various criminal activities, mainly around a block of flats where he has his "lair". There is a very good description of the clausetrophobian affect of flat life in the era. Towards the finale the matter of motor cars rears its head! A very worthwhile read.

I found this quite a difficult book to place . it isn't a thriller or a detective book in the classical sense . It is an acutely observed study of both the best and the worst aspects of post war housing issues in London . Please don't be put off by that as the study of the criminals ,both major and petty are very well done as is the accuracy of the early 1970's . The sense of alienation of Sledge is brilliantly written and the denoument is well handled .
