Ruth's tribe are her lively children and her filmmaker husband, Simon, who has Motor Neurone Disease and can only communicate with his eyes. Ruth's other "Tribe" are the friends who gather at the cove in Greystones, Co. Wicklow, and regularly throw themselves into the freezing cold water, just for kicks. "The Tragic Wives" Swimming Club', as they jokingly call themselves, meet to cope with the extreme challenges life puts in their way, not to mention the monster waves rolling over the horizon. Swimming is just one of the daily coping strategies as Ruth fights to preserve the strong but now silent connection with her husband. As she tells the story of their marriage, via diagnosis to their current precarious situation, Ruth also charts her passion for sea swimming - culminating in a midnight swim under the full moon on her wedding anniversary. An invocation to all of us to love as hard as we can, and live even harder, I Found My Tribe is an urgent and uplifting letter to a husband, family, friends, the natural world and the brightness of life.

Ruth Fitzmaurice was a radio researcher and producer when she married her husband, Simon, in 2004 and had three children. In 2008, Simon was diagnosed with ALS and given three years to live. Simon went into respiratory failure in 2010 and was accidentally placed on a ventilator during an emergency procedure. He decided against medical advice to keep the ventilator; Ruth and Simon went on to have twins in 2012. She lives in Greystones, Ireland, with her five children, two dogs and two cats.

Reviews

  • Insight into living well with a seriously-ill partner.

As her husbands body deteriorates, kept alive by humming, moving machines, Ruth must navigate the everyday chores of a houseful of children and their needs, always intruded upon by a stream of nurses and carers. She finds exhilarating freedom and a return to sanity by Moonlight dives and swims in a cold and battering sea. I find myself drawn to this pleasure as I have been an adrenaline junkie most of my life, mainly on wild horses as a child and in wild oceans at midlife. Sharing Ruth’s love of nature, I understand her conversation with the tree. Loved this book.

  • Beautifully written and incredibly honest

What a story. What a read. Beautifully written and incredibly honest. My dad died of MND thirty years ago. I watched my own mum nurse him to the very end. This book gave me an insight into how my mum's life was so transformed the day we got the diagnosis. I admired all she had done before but even more so now. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I enjoy writing, but this is writing on a whole different scale. Beautiful, inspiring, heartwarming. The writers strength and weaknesses were so eloquently described. This is one of those books I wish I'd never read...just so I could read it again for the first time.

Very well written book. Ruth interweaved stories from her childhood and her early relationship with Simon with the current difficulties she faces now that her husband has MND. One of their boys described how their heart fell into their stomach in their childish description of 'being in love' and there were many moments in this book when my heart fell into my stomach, but through sadness thinking about the difficulties some people have to contend with. People get through tough times with the support of others and Ruth describes well how not only their family, their wider circle of friends and her swimming buddies have supported her. I hope in time that Ruth Fitzmaurice can write more and Simon can direct more films.
