A group of young Irish migrants leave a man called Hopper for dead on an outback road in Australia. They barely know him; no-one will miss him in their world of hostel wild nights on cheap wine and grinding work on isolated farms. In this powerful novel about the discovery of responsibility, three young people—Fiona, Murph and Hopper—flee the collapse of their country's economy. In the heat and endless spaces of Australia they try to escape their past, but impulsive cruelty, shame and guilt drag them down, and it is easy to make terrible choices.

Reviews

  • GREAT SUMMER READ

Raw and unadulterated stories of young Irish in Australia. This book takes you on a ride through Australia; capturing the essence of what a simultaneously wild, lonely, exciting and hard edged world we live in. The descriptions of partying and unraveling of some of the characters reminded me of Hunter S. Thompson's writing however feels fresher, a more elegant and subtle point of view. Fiona especially captured me, I could really empathise with that wandering and unshackled place she was in; felt like my mid twenties again. Other reviews spoke to plot so I'm not going to repeat; in essence this book is a perfect thought provoking adventure; great deep summer read.

  • Not my favourite

Not my favourite. Too much drugs and party going on. Didn't like the characters or the way of writing the story.

  • Three stories that all connect in the end

Picked up my first copy during a holiday in Dublin, and honestly this was the first book I've read cover to cover in a long time. I enjoyed it so much that I bought an additional copy to give as a gift.

Before visiting Ireland for first time, I wanted to read a piece of fiction currently popular there. I was surprised bey the setting (Australia) but soon came to understand the relevance t contemporary Irish society. Gripping and hard to put down.
