Longlisted for the American Library in Paris Book Award Winner of the American Book Award Winner of the PEN Oakland Josephine Miles Award PERHAPS THE GREATEST VICTORY OF THE OPPRESSED OVER THEIR OPPRESSORS IN ALL HISTORY The end of slavery started in what was then San Domingo. In 1791, the enslaved people of the most prized French sugar plantation colony revolted against their masters. For over twelve years, against a backdrop of the French Revolution, they fought an epic black liberation struggle for control of the island. Theirs was the first and only successful slave revolution. It was the creation of Haiti as a nation, the first independent black republic outside of Africa, and an international inspiration to the persecuted and enslaved. This is the impassioned and beautifully drawn story of the Haitian Revolution and its incredible leader: Toussaint Louverture. The text of this graphic novel is a play by C. L. R. James that opened in London in 1936 with Paul Robeson in the title role. For the first time, black actors appeared on the British stage in a work by a black playwright. The script had been lost for almost seventy years when a draft copy was discovered among James’s archives. Now this extraordinary drama has been reimagined by artists Nic Watts and Sakina Karimjee.

Need More Books Like This
I great adaption of an underrepresented part of history! The art is incredibly expressive and did an excellent job making the many different characters easy to differentiate. I knew a little about the history, but it has really helped me to have it laid out in a visual format.

A great story of peoples striving for freedom and jsutice - in which we the people WIN!
James set out to write a book to help the struggle against colonialism and racism in Africa and around the world, and the book the Black Jacobins has done exactly that. The play which this graphic novel makes accessible to a brand new audience, was part of that project. We all owe a great debt to the Haitians who defeated the great armies of Europe to win their freedom. They then armed Bolivar to throw the colonialists out of South America and free the slaves there. And Frederic Douglas credited their struggle with helping to win the civil war in the US for the anti-slavery forces. It is a great story now being told in a new format as the liberation of humanity throughout the world continues. James would have been delighted.

A Tour de Force
This tells an important story in history that has been adapted as a play by CLR James. This illustrated version makes it accessible to a wide readership. The amount and quality of work by the artists, Nic Watts and Sakina Karimjee is truly impressive.

What a wonderful book
This really seems to be a labour of love. Bringing CLR Jame's work to life in a most readable style. So pleased that I found this tome!
