    Wonderful story.

  • Superb historical fiction of the search for the Holy Grail by a young boy and his friends

This historical fiction takes place in Glastonbury, England during the year of 1171. Hugh, a thirteen year old crippled boy, is left at Glastonbury Abbey by his fleeing father to be cared for, and schooled. The mysterious Hugh has been sworn to secrecy by his father and forbidden to tell any information concerning their past. Hugh is soon assigned to and befriended by a kindly monk who runs the small abbey library. Hugh learns to make paper and copy old books to provide for the abbey's meager library. Hugh becomes friends and blood brother to by a young boy his age named Dickon. Together they set out to explore a hidden underground storage room with ancient treasures accidentally found by Dickon. This leads the boys to become involved with a mad hermit whose tales of King Authur and the Holy Grail, send the three in search of the Holy Grail that is said to be hidden in Avalon, the site of Glastonbury. A series of events is set in motion that will lead Hugh and his friends into adventure, danger, madness, spirituality, and the supernatural. This is a superb story that is laced with several authentic events happening in this time period in England. Beautifully told, this book will move you.

  • Lovely read

This is no doubt a book for older children, but adults can enjoy it too (as another reviewer remarked). I did.

  • History came alive

We read this for history with our homeschool. A bit over the head of our 7 year old, but still held his and his 10 year old brother's interest and made history real.
