Work Information

A nation’s division casts a long shadow over one family’s fate.

State of Emergency weaves together regional history from the 1940s to the present through a woman who joins the fight for freedom, a journalist digging into a massacre, and a son uncovering his family’s past. As the stories intersect, it asks both how memory falters and why telling still matters.

Reviews

  • Riveting. Well informed but not heavy handed

This historic novel is more riveting than expected. The novel is obviously based on a lot of archival research, but it does not feel heavy-handed at all. The writer knows not to overwhelm the reader with dry data. Very useful for those who want to know Singapore, Malaysia and other Sinophone communities more.

  • Brilliant book. Learnt a lot

This book is a historical fiction—of the political struggle in 20th century Singapore and the lingering state trauma and anxiety from those years that still affects the way it treats its citizens today. Fantastic read for anyone interested in Singapore politics. Brilliant writing style too.

  • Wonderful book of historical fiction

A wonderful book of historical fiction by Singaporean writer Jeremy Tiang. The overlapping stories revolve around political upheaval in Singapore and Malaysia in the post-war period to the present and capture some of our region's forgotten history.

  • Malaya for the Malays

Well of course I was intrigued by the attitude of these young Chinese rebels as to thinking they were the rightful inheritors of the Malayan peninsula and Singapore ! My father lived and worked pre war and after prisoner of war time afterwards as an employee of an engineering company . All European and Australiaans domociled in those countries whether in government employ or company or as professionals were only in those countries as long as their contract lasted and at the termination of that agreement would leave! The British government saved Malaya for the Malays by destroying Chinese communist influence by force during The Emergency something I witnessed personally as a young person caught up in the times!
