Winner of the Prix Goncourt 2011 The story begins during the first Gulf War: the narrator, in the middle of a personal crisis, makes the acquaintance of an old serviceman turned painter, Victor Salagnon. Across the memories of Salagnon march fifty years of French history seen again across military fact: World War II, Indochina, Algeria, and more. Beyond The story of a friendship between two men is a questioning of contemporary France and ideology.

Reviews

  • What beautiful book. I haven't read anything in French for a long time so I'm using my dictionary fairly frequently, but it is well worth the effort.

  • This could turn out to be a good novel. A hundred pages into it, the issue is still in doubt. One thing is clear: the author is proud of his prowess in the French language, likes to show it off, and details his thoughts on the settings and his characters' thought processes to the nth degree, so it is a voluminous tome. Because I am reading French novels to teach myself idiomatic and colloquial French, I will keep plodding on, because this book, more than Alfred Daudet or the other more modern novels I have read in French, is teaching me what I want to learn -- and that's not L'Art Francais de la guerre!
