Clever, clever book!
A realistic/satiric look at diplomats during the period of the disintegration of the Iron Curtain. A "ship of fools" narrative, Bressant assembles his cast of characters at a London conference and through them examines attitudes to a changing Europe. And to top it off there's a romance between imperfect adults who are 50-60 years old: imagine that! It is in French, and hard French at that, using a lot of contemporary (rather than literary) lingo. Worth the effort.
