  • Wonderful book!!

    Loved this book!

  • Here's a book worth reading!

This is a very good book for the beginning student of German. Erich Kaestner is a very interesting person, and he has an excellent way with words. His book is written for younger people, and he knows how to keep the reader's interest. I first read Mein Onkel Franz in a series of easy readers, and I liked the book so much I decided to read the whole book from which Mein Onkel was a simplified extract. Als Ich ein kleine Junge war is well worth reading, and with a good dictionary it is not at all difficult. The Kindle version, which is what I bought, is very good value. I like the fact that it keeps your place, and if you think you've seen a word before somewhere before in the text you can find it easily.

  • Sehr schönes Buch

Meine Mutti hat das Buch mit großer Freude gelesen. Sie fand es vor allem schön, weil es einzelne Geschichten sind.

  • Childhood autobiography with charm but without sentimentality

Reading this was a thoroughly pleasant experience, somewhat like reading Laurie Lee's "Cider with Rosie", but without the schmalz - the young hero experiences life from the basis of a warm family life led by his mother, but has life's rougher side to cope with, too. This is set against the background of life in a German state capital in the early part of the last century, where you were likely to come across the king out shopping in the town centre - the etiquette was to pretend you hadn't seen him - and against the grown-up author's perspective of having lived through two World Wars. I found this really moving, and wish the book were better known in the English-speaking world.
