A painstaking biographical inquiry into the life of Rodrigo Diaz, the legendary eleventh-century Castilian warrior known as El Cid, disentangling historical fact from myth. Drawing on primary sources, Fletcher scrutinizes the conventional image of the devout Christian hero and reveals instead a more complex figure who served as a mercenary under Muslim rulers. The book illuminates how the heroic legend was constructed against the turbulent backdrop of medieval Spain's political, religious, and cultural conflicts.

Work Information

A vivid portrait of a man who lived through the Reconquista, cutting through layers of myth and legend to reveal the historical reality beneath.

El Cid has long been celebrated as Spain's national hero, an invincible Christian knight who held back the Moorish tide. But Richard Fletcher, reading the primary sources with meticulous care, shows how far this legendary image diverges from eleventh-century reality. The historical Rodrigo Diaz was in fact a mercenary who switched allegiances freely, spending five years fighting for a Muslim ruler against fellow Christians. This book traces the birth and transformation of the heroic myth while painting a vivid picture of medieval Spain as a complex crossroads of civilizations on the eve of the Crusades. Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.

Review Summaries

  • Generally well received. Readers who expect a straightforward biography sometimes find the extensive historical contextualization in the first half slow-going. However, the second half, which focuses directly on El Cid, is praised as compelling and accessible. The work is valued as an indispensable resource in Japanese for understanding this historical figure.

  • English-language readers praise the rigorous source criticism and elegant prose style. Some note that the weight given to historical analysis can overshadow the biographical narrative, but the book is widely recognized as an accessible and scholarly introduction to medieval Spanish history.

Reviews
