イギリス中世の 農家を舞台にした 動物物語です。ずる賢い狐の 甘い言葉に だまされ 狐の口に くわえられた 気位高い おんどりが 反対に うまく 狐をだまし 逃げ出します。その駆け引きが面白いのです。英語国民に 昔から 伝えられて来たお話との事ですが 動物たちだけの 登場じゃなくて 貧しい 母娘家庭で 飼われている にわとりなのは 何か 社会風刺とかの 意味合いがあるのでしょうか？ クーニーの絵は 十四世紀の 原作の 雰囲気を 忠実に 生き生きと 伝えているとの事、家屋の構造や 服装の時代考証も ゆるがせにしていないとの事です。
